RESUME: TIMOTHY HOOKINS - ARCHITECT
Tim grew up in South Africa and studied architecture at the University
of Cape Town, graduating in 1976. After working for 2 years at the
National Building Research Institute in Pretoria assisting with
research on school construction, he migrated to England in 1978
and worked for a large firm of architects in London. He specialised
in the design of schools and medium density housing.
In 1983 Tim migrated to Sydney. He joined Geoffrey
Twibill and Associates, Architects, designing a large education
building and working on many retirement housing projects.
In early 1985 Tim set up in private practice in
Manly, working on residential projects from high-rise to renovations,
also including some industrial work. One of his clients at that
stage was Bill Handley. It soon became clear that producing Home
Additions using "Design and Construct would evolve as the most
effective and stable way forward.
RESUME: BILL HANDLEY,
BUILDER
Bill Handley grew up in Avalon on the Northern Beaches of Sydney,
the son of a stonemason/bricklayer. He had the opportunity to observe
at first hand how the residential building industry operates from
a tradesman's point of view.
In 1969 Bill started work in a Real Estate agent's
office in Brookvale. The experience he gained there in administration
and accounting has been a valuable foundation for his running of
a construction firm. In 1973, he moved to another Real Estate firm
which carried out renovations of residential units in the Eastern
Suburbs of Sydney. Bill's role was the administration of the jobs,
hands-on work and liaising with the outside architects.
This work grew to the point that Bill became an
independent contractor, earning his Builders Licence in 1978. He
turned his attention to winning work by tendering for jobs run by
architects. In all, he worked for 26 different architects and has
not fallen out with any of them!
In 1985 Bill took on Tim Hookins as an architectural
consultant with a view to carrying out Design and Construction jobs.
It soon became clear that this system had big advantages over other
ways of having home additions built and at the beginning of 1987
a new company was formed with Bill and Tim as joint directors for
the purpose of doing Design and Construct additions.
